THE NEXT LIST: WILLOW SHIELDS

Willow Shields is a name to be reckoned with, and a talent to watch out for in 2014. Making her theatrical debut as Primrose Everdeen – younger sister to Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in the blockbuster hit THE HUNGER GAMES, Shields will expand her role in the highly anticipated sequel, THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE. The engaging New Mexico native is making an enviable climb to success with each project she takes on…and how many people can say they are muse to Marc Jacobs?

RISING STAR: WILLOW SHIELDS

THE SHIELDS FILES

NEW MEXICO STATE OF MIND: All deserts and blue skies! I grew up in the country and my family has a couple of acres. We had lots of animals, including, at different times, chickens, geese, and a few goats along with the usual dogs, cats, and an occasional lizard. My family was always into art and spent tons of time doing art, photography, and crafting. I still love photography and try to take a lot of pictures everywhere I go.

DESIGNER CRUSH: I really love Elie Saab, Marchesa, Oscar de la Renta and Marc Jacobs.

FAVORITE PIECE IN YOUR CLOSET: My red Marc by Marc Jacobs pants with hearts all over them. I never get tired of wearing them!

BEST FEATURE: I think my best feature is that I am a total bookworm! Once I get sucked in, it can be hard to put a great book down. I think people I meet who read a lot are usually smart and fascinating and it is a great feature.

I NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT MY… iPod & headphones!

I LOVE MY…  Ever growing record collection. I love vinyl and everywhere I go, I try and find a record shop and add a few new records to my collection.

BEST ON-SET MOMENT FILMING CATCHING FIRE: I couldn’t pick one moment. I think just hanging out with the cast. Being with Jennifer, Josh and Liam during down time was cool. They make your time on set so fun. Other than that, probably being able to work with Lenny Kravitz. He was a sweet guy and unbelievably cool.

BEST FILM HANDS DOWN, EVER!: The Breakfast Club!

TREASURED POSSESSION: My red record player I got for Christmas one year.

HERO: Meryl Streep. One of the most diverse actors around. I love her!

NEW MEXICO NATIVE WILLOW SHIELDS

HYDROGEN MAGAZINE: As a kid, were you the one hamming it up when company came over or dancing in front of the mirror with a hairbrush?

WILLOW SHIELDS: No! I was always a little shy around strangers and not really outgoing. I was, however, a very dramatic child. My family still teases me about how I would cry at the drop of a hat, then five minutes later be laughing my head off!

HM: Do you remember the moment you knew you wanted to be an actor or a performer?

WS: Well, I kind of knew when I was really little. I used to say I would walk a red carpet one day. But, even though I was acting here and there, I don’t think I really realized I wanted to be an actor until The Hunger Games. I know it sounds funny, but that was when I first really felt like this was something I could be good at.

HM: You play Primrose Everdeen in THE HUNGER GAMES. How did the role come to you? Was it the normal audition process?

WS: Since I live in New Mexico, my initial audition was by tape. That tape was sent to the casting director and eventually was sent to our director Gary Ross. Gary liked it and they wanted me
to fly to LA and audition there. I met with Gary, the casting director and producers. I read with them and they offered me the role on the spot. I guess that’s not the USUAL! It was very exciting though!

HM: Tell me about Primrose and what makes her tick…

WS: Prim is all about taking care of others. Her life centers around her mother and sister and her pet cat. But, she is such an amazing character to play because of how much she grows. Prim has all her mother’s skill in medicine and is growing into a great healer.

ON JENNIFER LAWRENCE: SHE IS LIKE A BIG SISTER AND YOU COULD TALK TO HER ABOUT ANYTHING.

HM: How did you approach playing her, as it is an emotionally demanding role?

WS: I tried to put myself in her shoes, tried to relate her relationship with Katniss to the one I have with my twin sister. Also, from The Hunger Games to Mockingjay, Prim grows up quite a bit. I can relate to her so much because I am basically growing up right along with her. She is an incredible person and I try to bring whatever I can to the set to do her justice and to make Suzanne Collins proud.

HM: Favorite thing about working with Jennifer Lawrence…

WS: She is like a big sister and you could talk to her about anything. She’s also the funniest person I ever met and very sweet.

HM: Have you been surprised by the success of THE HUNGER GAMES and how mad about the series your fans are?

WS: Yes! Fans already loved the books, and I did too! But, when I started working on these films, did I ever think they would be so loved by the fans? Not really…I mean, we all hoped the fans who loved Suzanne Collins’ books so much , would also love the movies, but I don’t think you can ever be sure. Luckily, they have, and everywhere we go, the fans show up and give us so much support.

HM: What do you make of what has happened to you at such a young age? Do you pinch yourself sometimes?

WS: I pinch myself all the time!! It’s kind of crazy to think that one audition changed my life forever. But, in the best ways possible.

HM: What do you love to do when you’re not working?

WS: I love to dance. I do ballet and recently got pointe shoes. I was very excited about that. I also do Hip Hop and gymnastics. Also, I love to read.

HM: You already have an impressive resume. What are some of the goals you have set for yourself?

WS: Just keep doing what I’m doing and continue to have the chance to play challenging characters. It’s the coolest part of the job!

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE IS IN U.S. THEATRES ON NOVEMBER 22ND.
