THE AFFAIR: THE MYSTERY BEHIND ALISON’S DEATH…

Showtime’s The Affair, constantly plays with the mind because you are never quite sure if what you are witnessing is the truth or not, as each episode plays out through the eyes of several characters who see things through their own tinted lenses.

We know Alison (Ruth Wilson) is dead, but the question is, was it of her own doing or possibly at the hands of love interest Ben (Ramon Rodriguez)? Someone else perhaps? As episode 9 played out, we were given more clues as to what happened as the season nears the end.

In the first half hour, Ben is all flowers, tender and apologetic when he stops by. He has lied to Alison and he is truly sorry. He opens up about his tortured life as a soldier and the toll it has taken on him and Alison in turn reveals that she feels directly responsible for the death of her son, Gabriel. Yes, it was a drowning, but it was a secondary drowning at home after Alison failed to take Gabriel to the hospital. Alison and Ben know they will part ways but they connect emotionally, culminating in a steamy romp out in the elements.

THE AFFAIR

In the second half hour, events take place much differently even though the setting is the same. Ben comes over as before, but everything is much colder and more aggressive this time around. Ben and Alison lock horns, with Ben angry and defensive as Alison accuses him of lying about having a wife and a family. Ben, who has been in recovery begins to drink and increasingly becomes more violent, slapping Alison before he knocks her head into a wall, causing the bloody wound that could have led to her ultimate demise. Does Ben dispose of Alison in the deep blue sea, or is that all in Alison’s mind?

Which of the two versions of events are we to believe? If Alison’s death wasn’t at Ben’s hands, what other players could be responsible? Did she decide to end it all? Will we ever truly know?

Such are the questions The Affair leaves us with – a flawed understanding of what we are seeing with our own eyes. We will have to wait and see if there is a satisfactory resolution to Alison’s story, a character who has been as beguiling as she has been mysterious from the start.
