JESSICA CHASTAIN ACCUSED OF HYPOCRISY FOR WORKING WITH MATTHEW NEWTON ON UPCOMING FILM, ‘EVE’!

Jessica Chastain is coming under fire, being called out for hypocrisy as it was announced that Australian director, Matthew Newton, has been chosen to write and direct an upcoming film project, Eve, with Chastain serving as a producer under her Freckle Films banner.

Chastain has been a prominent supporter of the Time’s Up movement which sprung up in the aftermath of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. That advocacy for women is why many are surprised by her decision to work with Newton who has a documented history of alleged domestic violence, assault, stalking and intimidation.

Newton’s alleged offenses date back to 2007 in Australia, accused of violent assault and stalking of his then girlfriend, Neighbours actress Brooke Satchwell. Newton pleaded guilty to one count of assault.

In 2010, actress Rachael Taylor, who was engaged to Newton at the time, alleged physical assault, intimidation and mental abuse at the hands of Newton, leading to a two-year domestic violence order against him. Newton was accused of violating the order the following year.

Earlier this year, when controversy surrounded Newton’s film, Who We Are Now, being included in the SXSW lineup, Newton spoke out, offering, “It is absolutely intolerable to harm women, it is intolerable to harm men, it is intolerable to harm anyone. I had done these things, and I utterly regret it, and I have to live with this responsibility every day. I had a severe problem with substance and alcohol abuse then and for almost six years now I have actively worked every single day, one day at a time, to remain sober and live a clean, upstanding life.”

While Chastain is yet to respond to the criticism, she contributed to a joint statement released announcing the project which said, “Matthew is wonderfully adept at crafting complex and relatable characters. We’ve been fans of his work and are so thrilled to be partnering with him and Voltage on Eve.”
