SCARLETT JOHANSSON FIRES BACK AT HER CRITICS ON ‘RUB & TUG’ ROLE!

Scarlett Johansson is pushing back at her critics.

The 33-year-old star faced backlash over her last role in Ghost in the Shell, with accusations of white-washing by the studio in choosing Johansson over an Asian actor for the lead part. The role was based on the popular Japanese manga character, Major Motoko Kusanagi.

Johansson finds herself in hot water once again.

This time, the controversy surrounds her latest project, starring in the Rupert Sanders-directed feature, Rub & Tug. Johansson will portray Dante “Tex” Gill in the film, based on a true story about a Pittsburgh massage parlor owner in the 70s and 80s with mob ties, who ran a string of brothels. The tough-talking Gill wore suits and short hair, and was possibly going through gender reassignment.

The question is why Johansson is playing a transgender man instead of the role going to a transgender actor. However, Johansson shot right back at her critics, saying through her representative, “Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment.”

Jared Leto and Felicity Huffman played transgender characters in Dallas Buyers Club and Transamerica respectively, with Leto winning an Oscar for his role. Jeffrey Tambor won Emmys for his lead turn in the Amazon series, Transparent, also playing a transgender character.

Obviously, Johansson sees a double standard here. However, that hasn’t stopped continued criticism, perhaps compounded by the fact that her last role was also problematic.
