A prosecutor in Colmar, France released a statement, saying, “We’ve learned of the death by hanging of this American chef this morning in a luxury hotel. At this stage nothing suggests the involvement of a third party.”

CNN also released a statement on Friday. “It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain. His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time.”

Bourdain, who rose to fame with his candid memoir, Kitchen Confidential, was open about his struggles with heroin addiction and substance abuse in the past, however, it is unknown whether any substances were in his system at the time of his passing.

Bourdain had been dating Asia Argento, becoming a source of strength for the Italian actress who was one of Harvey Weinstein’s accusers, alleging that he raped her after she reluctantly agreed to give him a massage in a hotel room in France in 1997. After sharing her story last October in the New Yorker, Bourdain expressed his support for her on Twitter, posting, “I am proud and honored to know you. You just did the hardest thing in the world.”

A devastated Argento released a statement on Twitter, posting, “Anthony gave all of himself in everything that he did. His brilliant, fearless spirit touched and inspired so many, and his generosity knew no bounds. He was my love, my rock, my protector. I am beyond devastated. My thoughts are with his family. I would ask that you respect their privacy and mine.”

Bourdain also leaves behind an 11-year-old daughter, Ariane, his only child from his second marriage to MMA figher, Ottavia Busia.
