ABC CANCELS ‘ROSEANNE’ FOLLOWING RACIST TWEET BY THE SHOW’S STAR

On Tuesday, ABC cancelled the highly rated Roseanne reboot following racist comments made by the show’s star on Twitter. Roseanne Barr compared former Obama senior advisor Valerie Jarrett to an ape.

The shocking tweet, which has since been deleted said that if “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby = vj.” The reference was to Jarrett.

Barr initially dismissed the tweet as a joke before apologizing for it. But the damage was done. Comedienne Wanda Sykes, who consulted on the show, almost immediately announced that she was quitting because of the comments.

And after much public outcry, ABC followed suit, cancelling the top rated comedy. Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, said in a statement on Tuesday, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.”

The Roseanne reboot, struck a chord in the age of Trump, with many of his supporters gravitating towards the show, earning it first show ratings of 25 million. Barr herself is a vocal supporter of the President. Her offensive tweet follows a long string of controversial posts over the years, with the latest one going many steps too far.
