The book will follow Sulwe, a 5-year-old Kenyan girl who is dark-skinned and struggles to accept herself because of it, wanting lighter skin. Sulwe then goes on a great adventure through the night sky. The moral of the story is acceptance and the fact that beauty comes in many shades.

Nyong’o, who has talked candidly in the past about her own insecurities as a girl because of her dark skin, aims to inspire young girls to “walk with joy in their own skin.”

Sulwe is set for release, Jan. 2019, through Simon & Schuster.
