LUPITA NYONG’O SPEAKS OUT ABOUT HARVEY WEINSTEIN IN EMOTIONAL ESSAY

Writing in The New York Times, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o is the latest star to open up about her experiences with disgraced Hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein.

Nyong’o met Weinstein at an awards ceremony in Berlin in 2011 and he was introduced to her as “the most powerful producer in Hollywood.” The story on Weinstein according to one of Nyong’o’s dinner companions was that he was a good man to know in the business. But there was also a warning, “…just be careful around him. He can be a bully.”

Soon after that first meeting, Weinstein invited the Kenyan actress to a film screening at his Connecticut home with his family. Nyong’o recounts that 15 minutes into the screening, Weinstein said that he wanted to show her something, insisting she come with him. He led Nyong’o to his bedroom and said he wanted to give her a massage.

“For the first time since I met him, I felt unsafe,” Nyong’o said.

Nyong’o then told Weinstein that she would give him a massage instead, in her mind, taking control of the situation. But when Weinstein allegedly tried to remove his pants, she told him not to and headed for the door. Nyong’o says she rationalized away the disturbing experience, convincing herself that it was inappropriate but not outright sexual.

But Nyong’o is glad to be speaking out now, along with the many women Weinstein has allegedly harassed or assaulted, because now they can take their power back.
