A ruggedly handsome figure who never sought the celebrity spotlight and the trappings of fleeting fame, Shepard’s interests resided in the characters he brought to life in films like Days of Heaven, The Right Stuff, Baby Boom and August: Osage County.

The theater was perhaps where Shepard was most at home, bringing to rich life the heartland of the American West in plays including True West and Buried Child, which earned a Pulitzer Prize. Cowboys and dusty deserts were given new life with Shepard’s unique stamp such that won’t soon be forgotten.

Acting in countless films, authoring several books including the memoir “Motel Chronicles” and penning over 50 plays in a voice all his own, A Particle of Dread being his last effort, Shepard was one of a kind. The honesty and sometimes darkness he brought to each performance stood him apart, cementing him as one of the greats in both theater and film.
