Easter weekend spelled box office gold for The Fate of the Furious, with the franchise’s high-octane eighth installment raking in $100.2 million in its first week of release. The action flick took home a staggering $532.5 million worldwide, making history and surpassing Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the biggest global opening of all time.
Directed by F. Gary Gray, The Fate of the Furious brings together our favorite band of outsiders led by Dom (Vin Diesel), now out of the game and on his honeymoon with Letty (Michelle Rodriguez). The team have been exonerated, all looking to lead normal lives. But the arrival of a mysterious and seductive force, Cipher (Charlize Theron), pulls Dom back into the criminal world, confronting the team with challenges like they’ve never faced before.
In a distant second place was animated film, The Boss Baby, which took in $16 million in its third week of release. Nabbing the third spot was the Emma Stone-starring Beauty and the Beast, scoring $13.7 million in its fifth week, for a total domestic haul of $455 million.
Smurfs: The Lost Village settled for fourth place, taking in $6.7 million. Rounding out the top five was Going in Style with $6.29 million.
