2017 SAG AWARDS: DONALD TRUMP COMES UNDER FIRE AS ‘STRANGER THINGS’ AND ‘HIDDEN FIGURES’ WIN BIG!

“Good evening, fellow SAG-AFTRA members, and everyone at home, and everyone in airports that belong in my America. You are a part of the fabric of who we are. And we love you and we welcome you,” started Ashton Kutcher as he kicked off the 2017 SAG Awards.

And so went the night as actors from Kerry Washington to Julia Louis-Dreyfus joined Kutcher in making their political views clear in response to President Donald Trump’s immigration order, temporarily barring individuals from seven majority Muslim countries from entering the U.S. Several stars voiced solidarity with those stranded at airports due to the new law, urging for inclusion.

Emma Stone was left almost speechless by her Best Actress win for La La Land, presented to her by Jonah Hill. She beat out stiff competition from Amy Adams (Arrival), Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train), Natalie Portman (Jackie) and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins).

Viola Davis’ win for Best Supporting Actress for her emotional turn in Fences was expected, unlike her costar, Denzel Washington’s win for Best Actor over favorite Ryan Gosling. The win was a first for Washington who also directed Fences.

Mahershala Ali’s Best Supporting Actor win for his work in Moonlight was expected, but that did not make it any less emotional for him, as he was overcome when accepting the accolade, tearing up through his entire speech which moved the entire room.

There were surprise wins on the television side as well, starting with William H. Macy’s win for Shameless, over Jeffrey Tambor who was expected to win for Transparent.

Orange is the New Black bested The Big Bang Theory, Black-ish, Modern Family and Veep for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Lead star Taylor Schilling gave the acceptance speech, pointing out the multi-cultural cast from Nigeria to Puerto Rico.

Netflix hit series Stranger Things unexpectedly took home the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, beating out the likes of Game of Thrones and The Crown. The largely young cast led by breakout star Millie Bobby Brown could not contain their excitement as they took to the stage. And David Harbour’s passionate acceptance speech was one for the books.

True to awards season form so far, The Crown still had a big night with leads Claire Foy and John Lithgow taking home top acting honors.
