Divergent star Shailene Woodley is set to make a return to the small screen, where she first made her name on ABC Family’s The Secret Life if the American Teenager.
The 24 year-old star will join Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon on the HBO limited series, Big Little Lies, based on Liane Moriarty’s novel, and penned by David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal, The Crazy Ones).
As television increasingly becomes enticing real estate for big stars, thanks to the success of series like Homeland, House of Cards, True Detective and How To Get Away With Murder, just to name a few, it is no surprise that Witherspoon and Kidman have decided to jump on the train after optioning Moriarty’s novel under their respective production companies, Pacific Standard and Blossom Films. Initially imagined for the big screen, the project was ultimately re-visioned for television, under the care of Kelley.
Big Little Lies will star Kidman and Witherspoon as two of three mothers, Madeline and Celeste, with kindergarten-age kids, whose white picket fence- perfect lives begin to fall apart, with murder on the table. Woodley will play single mother Jane, completing the group of friends.
Kelley, Kidman and Witherspoon will serve as executive producers on the project, with Moriarty, whose best sellers include ‘The Husband’s Secret’ and ‘The Hypnotist’s Love Story,’ on board as a producer. Woodley’s recent work includes The Fault in Our Stars, The Divergent Series and the upcoming Oliver Stone drama, Snowden.
